Between Over Kellet and Kirkby Lonsdale

We, the undersigned, call on Lancashire County Council and the relevant highway authorities to reduce the speed limit on the B6254 between Over Kellet and Kirkby Lonsdale from the current National Speed Limit to 40mph.

The B6254 is a rural road connecting communities including Over Kellet, Arkholme, Whittington and Kirkby Lonsdale. The route contains numerous bends, narrow sections, concealed junctions, agricultural access points, cyclists, horse riders, walkers and residential frontage.

Residents, road users and visitors are increasingly concerned that the current National Speed Limit does not reflect the character and risks of the road. Lowering the limit to 40mph would:

• Improve safety for motorists, cyclists, pedestrians and equestrians
• Reduce the severity and likelihood of collisions
• Improve safety at junctions and farm entrances
• Create a more consistent and realistic driving speed along the route
• Improve quality of life for nearby residents and villages
• Encourage safer tourism and recreational use of the area

There is already evidence of speed enforcement concerns on parts of the B6254 near Carnforth and Over Kellet, including fixed speed camera locations.

What We Are Asking For

We therefore request that Lancashire County Council:

1. Conduct a full speed and collision review of the B6254 between Over Kellet and Kirkby Lonsdale
2. Consult residents and parish councils along the route
3. Introduce a permanent 40mph speed limit where appropriate
4. Consider additional safety measures including signage, road markings and traffic calming where needed

A reduced speed limit would help make this route safer for everyone while preserving access between our rural communities.
